Middle School Mathematics

Math Fundamentals – Sixth graders are getting started in a study of areas. Through decomposing and rearranging, they utilize their previous understanding of the area of rectangles to find areas of different figures.

Integrated Math – Integrated Math began the year with practicing being in randomized groups with a problem to solve. They worked to share ideas, strengths, questions, and problem solving strategies in preparation for their first unit on transformations and congruence. They began today by coming up with their own definitions of what “same” means and then applying it to triangles. From there we will look at how we can make “moves” to prove shapes are the same as well as create a definition of congruence.

Algebra 1- Algebra 1 students also began the year with various multi-step problems to solve in randomized groups. Through this work they created group norms and warmed-up their problem solving and creative thinking in preparation for a unit on one-variable statistics. Using statistical questions, they will be creating displays to reflect their data and will also be performing analysis on the data.

Geometry – Compasses and straightedges are the tools of choice as geometry students learn about constructions. These tools allow us to create precise and recreatable images that don’t require measurements and calculations.
