Working with “The Giver” and “Ship-Trap” Island

Last week, 6th grade continued it’s work on “The Giver.” They completed some vocabulary work and learned about Jonas’ assignment as “The Receiver of Memory.” This week, they will continue to learn more about Jonas’ story including all that his new occupation entails and just how much it will separate him from the others in the community…even his own family.

7th and 8th Grade continued their unit on “The Most Dangerous Game” by creating a map of the infamous “Ship-Trap Island.” This activity, in addition to being a fun way to show off their creativity, is also a fun way for them to visualize the story and their notes as they design and label the island locations as well as the path that Rainsford takes to avoid Zaroff during the hunt. So far, the islands have been imaginative and original. I always enjoy seeing what they come up with.  In addition to beginning this project, the students watched the old RKO production of “The Most Dangerous Game” from the 1930’s and, in addition to enjoying the melodrama, had an in depth compare/contrast discussion about the changes made from page to screen and why those changes might have been made, allowing them deeper understanding about concepts like audience expectation, visual storytelling vs. storytelling on the page, and more!
