Social Studies Update

Middle school students took time on Monday to honor United States veterans and have been learning about American wars throughout the week. As part of this, we read and discussed the words of President Dwight D. Eisenhower when Veterans Day was made a national holiday in 1954. We also discussed Armistice Day, its predecessor, and some key history around the Great War. Seventh and eighth grade students engaged with the poem, “In Flanders Fields” and had great discussion around its meaning.

Next week, we’ll return to each group’s respective topics. Sixth grade will be learning about empires, including Persia and Greece. Seventh and eighth grade will be examining Asian history in the years around Western colonization to learn what was similar or different in that part of the world. As always, students will practice their geography skills throughout to ensure they’re aware of the many factors that influence a region’s prominence and interactions.
