Mr. Long
6th Grade Math – We are continuing our work with ratios and conversions. Currently, students had their times for the 100m dash and 400m dash taken and have been tasked with converting those times from their respective distance / time ratios into miles per hour.
Algebra 1 – Students have received their first tests back and have made corrections over the long weekend. We have now started on the fabled y = mx + b slope-intercept formula. We will be working on rearrangements, t-charts and graphing over the next several weeks as more complicated mathematical concepts will be introduced.
Mr. Spurlin
Foundations of Algebra – Students continue to work on word problems, using decimals and fractions. Today we started with square number and square roots as we will use the rational and irrational numbers to solve application problems and use for algebra type problems like solving for Pythagorean theorem, used to solve lengths of right triangles.
7th grade Math – Students continue to work on word problems, using decimals and fractions. These problems to lead to financial type problems like markups, markdowns, sale and discount prices, taxes, and tips. We will also use percentage and decimals to solve problems to find simple interest.
7/8 Science – After the sections over motion and acceleration, students have spent the last couple of days making balloon powered cars. The idea was make a car out of various materials, mostly cardboard and one group used Legos to make cars powered by the released air from a balloon. Students are keeping daily journals, about what worked well and what didn’t work so good. The cars were to travel at least 5 feet and go as straight as possible, they used 9 inch and 12 inch balloons to see if the size of the balloon changed anything on the distance traveled. The students make several test runs and made adjustment to their cars and the balloons.
