{"id":6028,"date":"2026-04-22T16:05:03","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T16:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thesummitprep.org\/middleschool\/?p=6028"},"modified":"2026-04-22T16:05:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T16:05:03","slug":"from-padres-to-primos-exploring-family-in-spanish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thesummitprep.org\/middleschool\/2026\/04\/22\/from-padres-to-primos-exploring-family-in-spanish\/","title":{"rendered":"From Padres to Primos: Exploring Family in Spanish"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>We recently wrapped up a fantastic unit on family (<strong>la familia<\/strong>) in 6th grade Spanish, and I wanted to share what students accomplished!\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Throughout this unit, students mastered expressing ages using phrases like &#8220;<strong>\u00bfCu\u00e1ntos a\u00f1os tienes?<\/strong>&#8221; (How old are you?) and learned to identify a wide range of family relationships\u2014from immediate family like parents (<strong>padres<\/strong>) and siblings (<strong>hermanos<\/strong>) to extended family such as grandparents (<strong>abuelos<\/strong>), aunts &amp;\u00a0uncles (<strong>t\u00edas &amp; <\/strong><strong>t\u00edos<\/strong>), and cousins (<strong>primos<\/strong>). They also learned descriptive adjectives used with the verb ser (to be), so they can now describe family members both physically and by personality using words like <strong>alto\/a<\/strong> (tall), <strong>simp\u00e1tico\/a<\/strong> (kind), and <strong>inteligente<\/strong> (intelligent). <strong>\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\u200d\ud83d\udc66<\/strong><br \/><br \/>Family is one of the best entry points into a new language because it&#8217;s personal and universal. By learning to talk about their own families in Spanish, students connect the language to their real lives, making it feel relevant and memorable.
