In this class, students will learn about inorganic and organic chemistry. A large portion of this class will be the acquisition of laboratory skills. Conceptually, we will start small and grow larger over time. Students will begin by learning about atomic structure and how to use the periodic table as a tool. Topics beyond this include understanding the kinetic molecular theory of gases, types of chemical reactions, stoichiometry, and the real-world applications of each. Chemistry is all around us and it is important for students to understand that chemistry can explain the mundane as well as the spectacular. We are also excited about going to Drury University throughout the school year to use their lab facilities.

Class Sequence

6th Grade: FUNdamentals of Science When sixth graders make the move to middle school, they are given the chance to explore science broadly.  This class mixes a wide variety of topics. The nature of science figures prominently in this class, and students learn how to...

Lab Week

This week the chemistry class is going to Drury for our first lab activity.  We will be studying types of chemical reactions.  In the classroom students will be learning how to write lab reports.  We will continue to learn how to predict molecular shapes based on...

Significant Figures and Scientific Notation

Today Chemistry students began learning about sig figs and scientific notation.  Sig figs are something that most students never learn to appreciate, but are very valuable when expressing the precision of measurements.   As a result, we will be measuring on a variety...
