This week at The Summit, Miss Strickland taught the calculus students about optimization. Optimization is the process of finding the first and second derivatives, which in turn are used to find exact dimensions of a variety of objects. Optimization has many real-life applications, including minimizing surface area of cereal boxes in order to reduce the production cost. No matter what the students are doing, Miss Strickland makes sure even the hardest math is enjoyable and understandable!

The entire upper school Spanish classes are learning about Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). They are learning about the culture and traditions, and meaning behind the celebration of dia de los muertos. As shown in this photo the students are drawing traditional sugar-skulls, designing alters, making masks and talking about the celebration, and how much they are learning about it. The Spanish classes will be focusing on Dia de los muertos November 1st and 2nd, the days that they are celebrated, to get a better understanding of why it is an important part of Spanish culture. All the students are focused and excited to be doing activities that are both informative and fun! At The Summit, Spanish is not only a class to learn the language, but to also understand and appreciate the history and culture that goes along with that language.

On Saturday, Nov. 4th, 2017, The Summit hosted the second annual S.A.V.E. Event (Student Advocates Volunteer Event) at the future home of the Summit Prep on Walnut Lawn. The event was a great opportunity for the students, from The Summit and other area schools, to get a closer look at volunteering opportunities open in the Springfield community. Overall, the event was a great success.
