Welcome Back!

It was a wonderful first day back with students. We were all excited to see each other again and get this semester started. The morning started with lots of catching up, some schedule updates, and welcoming back Mrs. Cook.

Middle School Social Studies

Sixth grade students are beginning the semester by completing their parody projects over women’s suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement. Sixth grade is also continuing its study of the Great War and the way its effects carried through the 1920s.

Seventh and eighth grade students are beginning the year with a short research project on the era of the Great War and the Roaring 20s. Students used class time in the fall semester to study the war and frame research questions that will become the basis of their projects, which will culminate in a formal essay. Students will have the option to study and write about the 19-teens or the 1920s, including the Great Migration, the Jazz Age, and the Harlem Renaissance. This will provide a foundation for understanding the stock market crash and the Great Depression that followed.

High School Social Studies

High school students wrapped up the fall semester with a multi-day assessment of their learning. Students are starting the new semester with Missouri as a territory of the United States, learning about those who migrated to this territory, the rapid population growth, and the legal challenges that came with so many layers of colonial governments in the Louisiana Territory.

Photojournalism

One of the spring electives that began today is a photojournalism class taught by Ms. Courtney Brown and Mrs. Smith. This elective is open to 8th grade and high school students who will be responsible for the completion of the 2019-20 yearbook for the school. Today was a nice time to discuss expectations and learn a little more about the task before us. It’s going to be a fun semester!
