One Week Down!

It’s Friday of the first week of school and I’m feeling very positive as get to know all my students better day by day and am amazed by what wonderful thoughts, discussions, and ideas they bring with them to class. In middle school, we began the week with a fun short story activity involving writing stories as an entire class! Each student wrote one paragraph of a story, crumpled it up, threw it in a bin (or at me which I think they enjoyed a little too much 🙂 ) and drew one out and continued with the story. The results were wonderfully disjointed and often hilarious involving many twists and turns that always kept us guessing.

Mid to the end of the week, I gave an assessment of sorts to all my grade levels to get a baseline for their abilities so I can better pinpoint the direction each class will take.  This has been eye opening and has definitely allowed me to see where the most potential lies and gave me valuable insight into how I can best help them grow!  Each class read the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury.  They all had some great things to discuss about the themes of the book and showed remarkable savvy for analysis.  I’m even more excited and enthusiastic now than I was at the start of the week. I can’t wait to see the places these awesome kids will go!

Photojournalism students are already hard at work gathering photos and planning the layout of the yearbook.  If there is anything you would like to see in this years annual, let me know and we’ll try to work it in!
