Service learning students started the year brainstorming for the rest of the semester, remaining flexible in their thinking as we have had to adjust the focus of our class a bit. Due to field trips being temporarily on hold, we are looking at alternative ways to serve our community, both at The Summit and the Springfield area. Early in the year, students worked collaboratively on a scavenger hunt, identifying local and state organizations that serve various populations. The information collected serves as a great resource as we start scheduling our guest speakers via Zoom to discuss the work they do serving others and provide students with a list of available volunteer opportunities in the community.
Students have also helped with the new furniture deliveries at school. New furniture for various classrooms need unpacked, put together, adjusted for height, and/or delivered to their correct locations. Their help with these deliveries from time to time is very much appreciated! Other students helped Mrs. K get the large puzzle pieces ready for the all school art project that will be completed by the end of the school year. We are so appreciative of our students and their service to The Summit!!
This afternoon, students will get to participate in MSU’s Public Affairs Conference virtually. The topic: Marginalization and the Fight to End Poverty: Ethical Approaches to Advocacy, is sure to provide lots of discussion opportunities for this class. Be sure to ask your student about their main takeaway points from this session.
