Math with Mrs. Cook

Recently the 6th graders have been exploring the world of integers. We have been playing games that require us to jump along number lines, adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers. Then we took those number lines and transferred what we had learned to the coordinate plane. We ranked fruit according to tastiness and difficulty to eat in order to learn about how ordered pairs help us have precision (you can see our rankings below). Now we are revisiting out number lines to graph inequalities.

In Algebra I, we have completed our study of linear and exponential functions and taken our assessment. Our ability to interpret linear and exponential functions in tables, graphs, equations, and scenarios has grown. We wrapped up our study by planning the “illest road trip, sponsored by MTV.” Students had $10,000 to spend on a road trip, and they had to make decisions about the type of lodging, meals, and vehicles to ensure that their road trip was possible and for how many days they could go. Finally we compared the “sponsorship offers” from three companies to determine which was best for the length and cost our our trip. A sample is below.

Precalculus/Trigonometry is wrapping up our final topic before reviewing for our final on December 9, which will cover all our first semester topics. We now have the ability to graph and solve linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic equations. Additionally, we can solve systems of linear equations in two or three variables as well as systems of nonlinear equations in two variables.
