Since returning to school two weeks ago, middle schoolers have been working on expanding their vocabularies with the study of Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes. They practiced first using the program “Flocabulary” which helped them by setting some of the common words and phrases to a fun rap that was entertaining and informative. The end of each of 3 of these presentations even saw the students write their own raps about the content and set them to a fun beat. The kids got super creative and they were fun to listen to! They’ve been able to practice their skills in a team-building Jeopardy-type challenge where they worked in teams to answer questions that ran the spectrum from super easy to incredibly difficult all while practicing their teamwork skills and testing their knowledge! This week, as a class, they’ve been engaging with another interactive program called “Nearpod” that has seen them working as a class towards common goals, practices, and even a race to see who has the best handle on the content. All in all, the students have picked up some great skills including using what they’ve learned to reason out new and difficult words based on the building blocks provided them through their affix studies.
