Social Studies Update

Sixth Grade –

Sixth grade students are nearing the end of their study of Rome. As a class, we’ve discussed several factors that led to the empire’s downfall, which leads us directly to the Byzantine Empire – our next topic of study. These students take joy in the discussion of power and influence, finding nuance in their exploration. Their continued growth in the study of history is impressive!

7/8th Grade –

Seventh and eighth grade students have been diligently researching and writing essays that argue the reasons for Rome’s fall. As part of this research and writing process, students are providing feedback on each other’s papers, which are due tomorrow. In addition to this, we have been exploring Constantinople and early leadership in the Byzantine Empire. This week, we will continue this discussion and learn about universalizing religions and their affect on empires during the Middle Ages.

High School –

High school students are continuing their study of nationalism and liberalism – and their resulting political movements – in the 19th century throughout Europe. As part of this study, students have begun a research project to highlight a political or social movement at any point during the 19th or 20th century. This project involves utilizing database research to uncover academic articles on their topics of choice, and students are practicing the valuable art of writing persuasive essays in Chicago format.

Philosophy –

Students in the philosophy elective have explored utilitarianism in a few forms, including some objections to the philosophical system. Our next topic of study is libertarianism. Alongside their readings and discussion, students are researching a philosopher of their choice and writing a short biographical sketch.

Culinary Arts –

Students in the culinary arts electives have crafted, among other things, Snickerdoodles, choux buns, pastry cream, salted caramel brownies, spinach-mushroom alfredo sauce, chocolate chip cookies, and cupcakes. Throughout this week, students in these classes are encouraged to spend some time in their kitchens at home – with parent permission – practicing their skills.

This class is also working on a digital cookbook to share with Upper School, using Google Sites. The first version is getting closer to being ready to share, and all of our recipes will be available in one place.
