Social Studies Update

Middle School

Middle school students are wrapping up their research presentations and doing a stellar job teaching their classmates about their topics of choice. Their creativity has been off the charts, and the depth of their research is showing impressive improvement. They were also challenged with this presentation to consider their thesis: what is it they’re attempting to teach their classmates?

From here, our classes move into a study of 1000 – 1300 CE and “becoming the world.” Students are asked to consider what innovations were necessary to better connect the world. They will be engaging with primary sources to highlight events and people of the time; today, sixth grade read about Mansa Musa of Mali and his trip through Cairo, Egypt.

High School

High school students are studying places around the world in the time period leading up to the Great War. Through this examination, they’re able to see specific patterns developing that contributed to nationalism and shifts in governing structures and controls.

Philosophy

Students in the philosophy elective learned about John Rawls this week and last. As part of this study, we read the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut to learn about “equal societies.” Students also created their own list of principles and laws that would go toward making a more equal society and shared with their peers.
