Math with Mrs. Cook

In 6th grade math, students are summarizing their learning of various types of data displays and analyzing them in the context of crops grown on a family farm (as well as discussing their vegetable preferences). By taking data provided in tables and converting them into data displays, they can more easily see mean, median, mode, and range. Additionally they can analyze the data in order to make predictions and suggestions for the next season. I have been so impressed with their diligence and focus on this project, as well as how much their knowledge of data displays and analysis skills have grown.

Algebra 1 students are wrapping up their study of solving quadratics, with an assessment coming up next week. They are solving by taking square roots, completing the square, factoring, and taking the quadratic formula. Again, the students have shown great work ethic as they do practice problems with each of the various types of methods. Before our assessment, we will analyze different equations to determine the best strategy for solving them (because despite the fact that the quadratic formula can always be used, it is not always the most efficient way).

Students in Precalculus/Trigonometry are also wrapping up their study of conic sections. They can graph ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas and convert equations from standard form into a more useful form for graphing. Next week, we will review circles and take an assessment on Wednesday.
