Social Studies Update

Sixth Grade:

Sixth grade is working on an inquiry-based project that arose from their study of geography this week. They wanted to know about the smallest countries around the world and why the exist – especially those within the borders of larger countries. They teamed up to answer their question, and they’re digging into the fascinating histories of these small nations.

Seventh and Eighth Grade:

Students in this class have just finished presenting on a variety of European nations under feudalism. This challenging project asked them to look at a number of criteria to understand the time from 1000 to 1300 more fully. They are also preparing for their final exam, which will take place next week.

High School:

High school students are presenting on the Great War, the Great Depression, and World War II right now. They drew countries involved from a hat and have conducted research to understand these three events in detail. They are also crafting a timeline that is pasted to the wall in the high school.

Additionally, in high school resource hour today, students discussed the student speech case before the Supreme Court this week. A few years ago, the Law Day topic was framed around freedom of speech, so students had relevant precedent to discuss with this recent example. We’ll keep an eye out for the decision of the justices.

Philosophy:

Students in philosophy are nearing the end of Michael Sandel’s book Justice. The final chapters ask what responsibility humans bear to each other, applying the various philosophies presented earlier in the book. Students have done wonderfully engaging with this material and thinking deeply and critically on each topic.
