Social Studies Update

Political Science

Students in Political Science are finishing the year strong. Each student recently wrote a policy memo, advising an elected official on a political issue of their choice. Topics varied widely, from research on STEM funding, counter-terrorism efforts, socialized healthcare, and standardized testing, to name a few.

Additionally, high school students took their final exam: the citizenship test. This one-hundred question test asked them to recall the entire year of learning, and students did a fabulous job.

World Religions

In this elective, students have researched the seven major world religions, including: Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Sikkhism. Students chose to wrap up their learning this year by researching a cult or fringe group to  present about in the final days of class. Through this research, they are able to make connections across religions and geography to understand humanity more fully.

Sixth Grade

The sixth grade class has studied liberalism and the Enlightenment, as well as industrialization, to understand the factors leading to the Great War. Students completed research projects on various areas of World War I and created posters for their classroom wall. This project, although short, helped them to identify the key significance of each moment in the Great War and to see how each contributed to the larger picture of the war.

Seventh and Eighth Grade

Students in the seventh and eighth grade class finished up their presentations and jumped into learning about the effects of colonialism in leading up to the Crimean War and the Great War. They are discovering the role of technology in these conflicts and the need for resources to drive new technology.
