This week we’re covering the letter S and all things winter (how appropriate!). Here are some updated ideas for today’s snow day and working with the letter Ss.
Snowball Toss
Materials: cottons balls, white socks, or crinkled paper, and a basket or container
Activity: Set up a “snowball toss” game. Ask your child to throw the desired materials into a container or basket from a certain distance. After each set of tosses, count how many snowballs are in the container vs out of the container. Which number is bigger, which is smaller? You can even have them practice number formation by logging the score. Switch up the container distance for a challenge.
S-Word Winter Story
Materials: paper, crayons/markers
Activity: Encourage your child to create a short winter story with as many “s” words as possible. Let them tell the story as you log it, helping them brainstorm some words that start with s if needed. They can draw and color pictures to go along with their story, as well as trace/circle/highlight all the “s” letters they see written. Make sure they add their name to the cover since they’re both the author and the illustrator!
Painting Ice
Materials: ice cubes, container for the ice, brush, paint (could be water colors, food coloring in water, or washable paints)
Activity: Let your child get creative with the paint brush and make a colorful display by applying the paint to each ice cube!

A Polar Bear in the Snow Read Aloud
We’re not the only ones who deal with snow and ice! After listening, ask your child how the polar bear’s environment is similar and different to ours right now. Can you think of other animals that live in a cold climate like polar bears?
