Here area a few fun Snow Day Activities you can do with items you already have around the house.
Make Snow-doh
Materials
- 1/2 cup lotion
- 1 cup cornstarch
- a little glitter (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together lotion and cornstarch. Start with a spoon and change to your hands to knead until the mixture forms a dough.
- Knead on table and add more cornstarch, as needed, until dough is no longer sticky.
- If you’re using glitter, knead it in now.
- Enjoy! Store in an airtight container so it doesn’t dry out. The students loved making this in class!
Watch the book, Sadie and the Snowman, written by Allen Morgan and illustrated by Brenda Clark on Storytime Anytime. Sadie uses all kinds of unique items to decorate a snowman each time it snows. What items do you have at home that you can use?
Paper Plate Snowman
Materials: Paper plates, markers, glue, scissors
Instructions: Let the child color and decorate a paper plate to make a snowman. Use unique and unusual items for the snowman’s eyes, nose and buttons.
Send a Pic: We would enjoy seeing your child’s creativity. Snap a pic and send it in!
Paper Snow Ball Toss: This game can be geared for a multitude of ages, from toddler to school age. Your focus can be colors, shapes, letters or numbers. For example: if your child is learning to spell their name, let them draw each letter on a separate piece of paper, wad it into a snowball, and toss it. The goal is to find each “Letter Snow Ball” and put them in the correct letter order. This game promotes turn taking, sequencing, and letter recognition.
I hope you enjoy your snow day. I will be making chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa.
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Murphy
