Writer’s Workshop

Students have been having so much fun in Writer's Workshop the past couple of weeks! We began calling our Writing time "Writer's Workshop" to help students understand they are truly taking on the role of an author when they write. Much of what inspires us to write comes from the stories we read! This week, many of our stories focused on the meaning of friendship. At the beginning of the week we read 'How To Lose All Your Friends'. There was a digital interactive game that followed this story and students were really engaged with analyzing each scenario to figure out if it was a way to 'win' friends or 'lose' friends.

We made our ‘Writer’s Workshop’ folders that contain an alphabet chart, a blends chart, sentence mechanics reminders, and we even got to decorate the front! Students have found these quite helpful in identifying what letters to write in words we’re trying to spell. Another long term goal is to have a sight word list for students to reference when working on writing.

Finally, our task on Friday was to interview a friend and draw their portrait after studying their features. Students enjoyed getting to know each other even more and partnered well to complete the task. Coaching from peers was provided on spelling each other’s names and adding details to our writing and/or pictures. What a great way to involve collaboration!
