The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.
The Summit participated in The Festival del Dia de los Muertos at Missouri State University. What a wonderful cultural experience! The students learned about traditions such as sugar skulls (Sugar skulls represent a departed soul). The art reflects the folk art style of big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments. They created papel picado, a decorative craft made out of paper cut into beautiful and elaborate designs. A favorite was making Mexican cempazuchitl flowers which are the traditional flower for Day of the Dead. They enjoyed delicious Mexican Pan do Muerto and visited the living alter that commemorated departed loved ones. Entertainment was even provided by Marimba Caliente Trio, Grupo Latinoamericano and Mariachi Nuevo Azteca.
