Third Grade Music

Third graders have been busy in music class. They have been learning to read rhythm patterns, learning to sing one Cajun song and one Jamaican song which gets them up and moving. They have also begun a keyboard unit. So far, we have been practicing identifying our finger numbers (different than on string instruments, since we count thumbs as “ones” at the piano), locating the sets of two and three black keys, using the two black keys to identify C,D, and E. We have also practiced playing simple songs than involve reading notes that move up, down, or repeat. All of these activities heighten their spatial reasoning skills.
