Exploring Informative Reading and Writing!

This week, third graders have been diving deeper into informative writing. Students have continued working on their informative essays and learning how authors organize and share information with readers.

Yesterday, we compared and contrasted opinion texts, informative texts, and personal narratives to identify the key characteristics of each type of writing. This helped students better understand how each text has a unique purpose and structure.

Today, we explored samples of informative texts about different types of penguins. Students noticed how these texts use headings, subheadings, captions, and pictures to organize information and support understanding. We also discussed how informative texts focus on presenting “just the facts.”

This work is setting the stage for a later study on reading informational texts, where students will learn to recognize different text structures and understand how authors share information effectively. We also talked about the many types of informative texts we encounter in everyday life, like how-to guides, manuals, and even recipes.
