Today third grade had an incredible adventure exploring Bridal Cave! Students traveled about a quarter of a mile into the cave, where they saw stunning rock formations such as stalactites and stalagmites. They were amazed to learn how the cave was formed by water dripping through limestone over millions of years, slowly creating the intricate passageways we explored.
Along the way, we noticed the cave’s many colors created by minerals like calcite and iron. We also learned that Bridal Cave is estimated to be around 500 million years old, though its exact age remains unknown.
Students heard fascinating stories about early explorers who described parts of the cave as looking like “drapes,” and we discovered carvings left by visitors from many years ago. We even spotted a tiny frog and learned that brown bats make their home inside the cave.
One of the highlights of the trip was seeing Spirit Lake, a vibrant blue, crystal-clear lake deep inside the cave. Students learned about its history and how it has remained a beautiful and mysterious feature of Bridal Cave for generations.
Our visit also touched on the region’s history, including the Osage and Delaware tribes who once lived in the area and may have visited the cave long ago. It was a truly unforgettable trip!
