Thank You, Omu!

Thank You, Omu! (Caldecott Honor Book)

Thank You, Omu! is a heartwarming picture book written and illustrated by Oge Mora, a Nigerian-American artist and storyteller. The story follows Omu, a generous woman who cooks a pot of thick, red stew so delicious that its scent drifts through her neighborhood, drawing visitors from near and far. Omu happily shares her stew with everyone who knocks on her door, only to find her pot empty when dinnertime arrives. In a beautiful act of gratitude, her neighbors return to share food of their own, creating a joyful feast together.

Inspired by Mora’s Nigerian and Igbo heritage, Thank You, Omu! celebrates kindness, community, and the joy of giving. Mora’s vibrant mixed-media collage illustrations bring warmth and texture to every page. The book earned a Caldecott Honor, a Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award, and widespread praise for its heartfelt message.

This story was also selected for the Global Read Aloud, an international reading project that connects students around the world through shared stories. As part of The Summit’s participation, Mrs. Bradley visited every Lower School classroom to read Thank You, Omu! Each student contributed an item to our own community “soup,” celebrating generosity and togetherness just like Omu and her neighbors.
