Yesterday third graders had a wonderful field trip to the Springfield Conservation Nature Center!
We attended a presentation about the expedition of Lewis and Clark, and third graders did an amazing job answering questions about important dates and details of the journey. They learned more about how the explorers survived, including the animals they hunted for food and supplies. Students even got to feel real pelts from animals like bears, wolves, badgers, and bison.
One of the most memorable parts was learning how Native Americans used every part of the bison. Students were able to see and touch the tail, scapula, horns, bladder, and even “meadow muffins” (bison dung), discovering how each part had a purpose.
We ended the day with a short hike and we had time to explore the exhibits inside the nature center!
