¡Vamos a Comer!

Today, Summit third graders celebrated the end of their trimester 2 Spanish unit by eating lunch at el Cielito Lindo, a local Mexican restaurant. Students prepared for several weeks by learning restaurant and food vocabulary and practicing necessary skills for our field trip, including reading a menu, listening to relevant questions in Spanish, and responding to those questions with their own order in Spanish. It required some serious dedication on their part, but all were able to say their lunch order in Spanish. Then they enjoyed the results of their efforts by enjoying a delicious meal together.

This is such a special opportunity for students to gain the first taste of real-world second language use. Often world language class can be limited in certain ways when we are only in our classroom every day. Stepping outside of the classroom is a refreshing way to apply skills learned in the classroom and directly teach just how crucial communication skills really are. The best teacher is practice and experience!
