The Final Stretch: What We’ve Been Up To in Third Grade

It’s been a busy and productive few weeks in third grade!

Math

We reviewed telling time and calculating elapsed time before diving into data and graphing. Students discovered different types of graphs, including bar graphs and line graphs. They helped create graphs using real data from our own class, and practiced interpreting what the graphs show. They also made line graphs to track the growth of their bean plants in science, giving them a meaningful, hands-on connection between the two subjects.

Writing

Students have been putting the finishing touches on their poetry books. This included designing their covers, creating a table of contents, gluing in or writing out their poems, and adding illustrations or printed images. On our four-day weeks without spelling, students have been practicing cursive writing and working through parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, prepositions, adverbs, and adjectives. We have also been reviewing capitalization, punctuation, and the requirements of a sentence.

Reading

After wrapping up our novel study of The One and Only Ivan, we have been revisiting core story elements: theme, plot, problem and solution, setting, and characters. This time of year is also the last checkpoint in 3rd grade for assessing reading levels, and completing reading assessments for each student is underway.

Social Studies

Students have been diligently studying Missouri government and completing their journals to demonstrate their learning. We have covered the three branches of government and their roles, elected officials and their responsibilities, how each branch functions in depth, the structure of the state court system and the legislative branch, and concepts like voting, individual rights, and the common good.

ERB Testing Update

We have completed nearly all ERB testing. The one remaining section, listening comprehension, was delayed due to a technical issue and will be administered on the first day all students are present.

Looking Ahead

It is hard to believe we are already approaching the end of the year. The next few weeks are full of wonderful things: field trips, student council elections, our third trimester celebration, Grandfriends Day, the spring concert, and plenty of feel-good moments to close out the year together.

Thank you for your continued support! I look forward to ending this year memorably. Have a wonderful weekend!
