In kindergarten, students create personal narratives by following a step-by-step writing process. First, they brainstorm small but significant moments from their lives, such as a birthday party, a trip to the park, or a favorite movie. They use a simple web to organize their ideas and details.
Next, students select a topic from their web and practice telling their story out loud. This helps build their confidence and assists them in sequencing their ideas. Afterward, they write a draft using straightforward sentence starters to express their thoughts on paper.
Once they have drafted their narratives in their learning journals, we collaborate on revising and editing. We check for proper use of capital letters, spaces, and punctuation. Finally, students publish their work by writing a neat final copy and including a detailed illustration, proudly sharing their personal narratives as young authors.
As we progress with more writing activities, students will learn to expand their ideas and ensure their stories have a clear beginning, middle, and end. This is crucial to avoid omitting important steps in their narratives. Additionally, students will explore different forms of writing, including how-to guides, poetry, persuasive writing, letter writing, and nonfiction/informational writing.
