Poetry

During writing time, kindergarteners have been exploring the concept of poems. Poetry in kindergarten goes beyond a mere creative exercise; it serves as an engaging method to develop literacy skills and nurture imagination. At this early stage, young learners are introduced to the rhythm, rhyme, and sounds of language, while shape poems offer a fun, visual way to bring these concepts to life. Students have created shape poems in which words are arranged to create a picture that symbolizes the subject of the poem. For instance, a poem about a tree would be shaped like a tree, or a poem about a banana would take the form of a banana itself. This style of poetry not only fosters creativity but also helps young children comprehend that words and language can possess both meaning and form. Additionally, students created name poems where they had to come up with a specific word or sentence that might describe themselves using the letters in their own name. Such as:

C = calm

E = energetic

D = determined

Name poems gave the students a chance to think about themselves and use descriptive words. They made connections to our knowledge of character traits while completing these poems. Our kindergarteners truly embraced poetry and enjoyed each concept.
