Kindergarten students have been learning how to tell time to the nearest hour and half-hour. We began by discussing the importance of telling time and how it helps us in our everyday lives, such as knowing when it’s time for school, lunch, or bedtime. Over the past few weeks, students have enjoyed several engaging mathematics read-alouds, including The Clock Struck One and It’s About Time.
Throughout our lessons, students participated in a variety of hands-on activities. They completed puzzles that helped them identify and assemble the different parts of a clock, and they took part in a classroom “clock hunt,” where they matched analog clocks to their corresponding digital times. We also used a variety of classroom clocks to practice telling time during our daily routines.
Students especially enjoyed learning about the differences between analog and digital clocks, as well as understanding the purpose of each part of a clock. In addition, we practiced counting by 5s to help students read the minute hand on an analog clock. This skill supported their ability to tell time more accurately and recognize how each number on the clock represents five-minute intervals. Overall, students have shown great enthusiasm and growth in their understanding of time!
