Kindergarten students have been enhancing their understanding of numbers through daily activities such as calendar time, math discussions, and consistent practice. Over the past three weeks, they have focused on exploring numbers in the teens to identify number patterns. Students discovered that teen numbers can be split into two parts: tens and ones. They observed that all teen numbers consist of one group of 10, and they noted that the word “TEEN” includes “TEN.” Additionally, they learned that all teen numbers have a 1 in front of them, followed by a second digit ranging from 1 to 9.
Throughout this unit on teen numbers, students engaged in various hands-on activities. They created and represented specific teen numbers using leaves, which fostered teamwork among their peers. They practiced cutting and pasting in their learning journals to strengthen their fine motor skills. They used playdough to form teen numbers and represented these numbers using tally marks, ten frames, and drawings of objects. They even played partner games by rolling dice and placing counters on the numbers of a number-filled leaf. Finally, they completed a “Teen Number Bug Hunt” around the classroom, where they found bugs with dots and created number sentences. We did many more hands-on activities during stations to strengthen their knowledge of teen numbers.
These students are making progress every day with their number recognition, and they have successfully completed our unit on teen numbers! We will now move on to exploring even and odd numbers, as well as numbers 20-30.
