Linear Measurement

First graders are learning about linear measurements as we have been working with both nonstandard and standard units.  Measuring with nonstandard units, such as paperclips, students have measured various classroom objects.  They are comparing quantities determining which items are longer, shorter, taller, higher, or wider than others.  They have also made comparisons between nonstandard and standard units as well as two different standard units such as inches and centimeters.  As we continue learning about linear measurement, first graders will use various tools including rulers, tape measures, and yard sticks.  They will practice measuring accurately, comparing units, recognizing and using abbreviations, and estimating.
