Number Bonds

Continuing to build number sense, first grade students are working with number bonds.  A number bond is a visual representation of the relationship between a number and the parts that combine to make that number.  Examining part-whole relationship through number bonds helps students to better understand the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.  Through continued practice with number bonds, students will reinforce addition and subtraction strategies and apply basic algebraic concepts.  As we begin, we will work with numbers through 10.  We will then advance to working with numbers to 20.  Worksheets coming home in this week’s Friday folder will demonstrate only a small sample of student work.  In class, we will use a variety of manipulatives to build understanding.
