This week in math we have been focusing heavily on learning our addition doubles facts. An addition doubles fact is a fact that repeats the same addend, such as 3+3=6 or 9+9=18. Students used manipulatives (counting bugs!), puzzles, and matching games in small groups early in the week to familiarize themselves with the doubles facts. Working with songs, dominos, counters and games throughout the week allowed students to reinforce and apply their understanding of this strategy. One way we helped our brains learn the doubles facts was by listening to Ms. Ursino’s favorite math song The Doubles Song each day!
First graders are starting to get the hang of their doubles facts! Today, they started an art project we are calling “Doubles Bubbles”. Students made a self portrait today. On Monday, they will add a pink balloon as their “bubble gum” and use a Sharpie to cover their bubble with doubles facts! Check out their art outside the first grade classroom early next week!
Listen to the doubles song below and try not to sing along! It’s so fun to sing! The class’ favorite part is when we sing “Twelve plus twelve is TWENTY FOUUUUUUUR”!
