Spreading Love Through Service Learning

This trimester, the Kindergarten, first, and second grade classes had the opportunity to participate in a very special service learning project that helped us put our big hearts into action. With Valentine’s Day approaching, we wanted to find a meaningful way to spread kindness beyond our classroom walls. We chose to create handmade valentines for the residents at Century Pines Assisted Living in Ozark to share a little extra love and cheer.

Before we began, we talked about what it means to serve others and how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. We also talked about how Valentine’s Day is a holiday all about showing love and kindness to others. The students were excited to learn that their creations would brighten someone’s day. They made thoughtful connections to people in their own lives who have lived in senior living communities. They took the responsibility of brightening the residents’ days seriously and worked with so much care and enthusiasm.

First, we made adorable pom pom creatures—our very own “love bugs!” Using colorful yarn, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes, students designed one-of-a-kind creations full of personality.

After our love bugs were complete, we created heartfelt notes in the shape of hearts. Students wrote cheerful messages to the residents, sharing kind words, warm wishes, and lots of love. We talked about how our words could make someone smile, especially someone who might not have family nearby on Valentine’s Day.

The Kindergarten classes did their own project to create hand-drawn coloring pages for the residents to color, because the facility director shared that their residents enjoyed coloring. After all four classes had completed the projects, we worked together to assemble the valentines creations into bags to be passed out to each resident.

This project was a beautiful reminder that learning goes beyond reading, writing, and math. The first graders practiced empathy, generosity, and community connection. They learned that they have the power to make a positive impact.

I am so proud of the thoughtfulness and compassion the students showed. We hope our love bugs and heart notes bring big smiles to the residents at Century Pines Assisted Living. After all, a little love goes a long way! 💕
