Canada, eh?

On Friday, we had two very exciting visitors that brought our study of other countries to life! As you might remember, the first graders studied Canada a few weeks ago while we were exploring our first continent of our unit – North America. We welcomed two hockey players from Drury University who are originally from Canada, KT and Levi! The first graders were so interested to learn firsthand about a country we’ve been exploring together.

Our guests began by reading two beloved children’s books by Canadian authors: Thomas’ Snowsuit by Robert Munsch and Scaredy Squirrel by Mélanie Watt. We all got a great laugh at both of these funny children’s stories and really enjoyed hearing our visitors’ accents!

Before the visit, our class worked hard to brainstorm and write thoughtful questions about Canada. After the read-alouds, the players took time to answer each one! Students learned about holidays and traditions celebrated in Canada, the weather, favorite foods, how the Canadian government works, and of course, hockey! Hearing directly from someone who has lived there made our learning feel authentic and exciting. To make the visit even more memorable, our guests also gave us a mini hockey demonstration! Students loved seeing their skills up close and learning a little more about how the game is played.

We are so grateful to our Levi and KT for taking the time to share their stories and experiences with us! Go Panthers!
