Our classroom took flight on Friday afternoon as we wrapped up the trimester with a truly unforgettable celebration!
After a trimester of weeks of exploring continents, cultures, habitats, and animal classifications, our students spent this past week deep-diving into research about a continent! Finally, they were ready to share their learning in a fun and interactive way. The classroom was transformed into a bustling “airport” complete with excited travelers (our families!) and knowledgeable tour guides (our students!).
Each first grader chose a continent to research and worked hard to learn about its unique cultures, environments, and native animals. Throughout the week, students flexed their literacy skills by reading tricky texts about their continents, During the event, students proudly guided their visitors from one “destination” to the next, sharing facts, answering questions, and leading hands-on activities that brought their learning to life.
Families were able to “travel” across the globe, stopping at each continent to experience something new. From cultural crafts to taste-testing snacks, every station showcased the creativity, curiosity, and hard work of our first graders.
More than anything, this event was a celebration of growth. Over this school year, the first graders have grown so greatly in their literacy skills. They have developed from the beginning stages of reading and writing, to well-rounded skills in reading, writing, phonics, handwriting and more. They have practiced research skills, built confidence in speaking, and developed a deeper understanding of the world around them. It was so special to see them take ownership of their learning and shine as teachers themselves!
Thank you to all of our families who joined us for this special day. Your support and presence made our journey even more meaningful.
