Wompanoag Homes (Wetus)

The Wompanoag people, originally from Massachusetts and Rhode Island, were the first to befriend the early settlers.  They lived in small dwellings called wetus, made out of birch wood, bark, and saplings.  Wetus had a hole in the top of the house to allow the smoke from their fires to escape.  Their homes were dome shaped to heat their homes evenly and to represent the cycles of life.

1st and 2nd grade scholars worked together to create their own wetus.  They first constructed a frame, then added strips of material to cover their homes leaving holes for fire and a doorway.
