Here a Line, There a Line, Everywhere a Line?

Last week the focus of our geometry unit was lines.  We discovered that not all lines are created equal!  For some, it was a difficult concept to grasp.  We learned that most lines are really line segments.  A line that has a beginning and end is not a line at all, but a line segment!  A true line in geometry has no beginning or end, it just keeps going and going in both directions.  A ray has a beginning but no end.  After much practice and discussion, we came to understand these geometric terms.  We then learned about parallel, intersecting and perpendicular lines.  It was so fun to go on a scavenger hunt to discover all the different types of lines, both in our school and outside.

The understanding of these different lines has prepared us for our next concept.  This week we will be learning about angles.  We will delve into the different types of angles; acute, right and obtuse.  We will investigate the angles we see and use each and every day.  These real world connections so help the students have a deeper understanding of abstract geometric concepts.
