Today, science and art came together as we explored snowflakes through the story of Snowflake Bentley. Students learned about Wilson A. Bentley and his discovery that no two snowflakes are alike, illustrating how curiosity and careful observation can lead to significant discoveries.
Snowflake Symmetry
Using Bentley’s photographs, we studied symmetry and noticed that snowflakes often have six equal parts. Students identified lines of symmetry and observed how repeating patterns create balance in nature.
Snowflake Design & Capture
Students then designed their own snowflakes, focusing on symmetrical patterns and repeating shapes. Just as Bentley captured snowflakes with his camera, students captured their learning through thoughtful designs and reflections.
This snowy study reminded us that science and art go hand in hand—and sometimes the most beautiful lessons fall quietly, just like snow. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
