This week, we began learning how authors use text features to help readers better understand nonfiction texts. Students had the opportunity to explore nonfiction books about space and practice identifying features such as captions, diagrams, labels, fun facts, and illustrations.

We then took our learning a step further by combining our reading, writing, and Solar System unit into one assignment! Students used what they have learned about text features to create their own nonfiction page about the Sun. They worked on writing factual information while also thinking like authors and deciding which text features would best help their readers understand their topic.

It has been exciting to see students take the information they are learning about space and turn it into their own informational writing!
