Last week, third graders became scientists and engineers as we explored the question: what is science?
Students created an ‘egg drop protection device’ in hopes they could prevent an egg from breaking when dropped. They made predictions, asked questions, formulated a design, tested their hypothesis, and modified their design based on the results.
They were creative with their designs, using materials such as rubber bands, straws, and even jumbo marshmallows to for cushion. Some groups designed a “parachute” to help lessen the impact!
Two groups out of the class successfully prevented the egg from breaking when dropped. It was a successful introduction to the scientific method!
