Following reflection of light, yesterday students experimented with refraction of light from air to water. They discovered how light waves change speed as they travel from one material to another. In this experiment, students placed a piece of paper with two arrows facing the same direction drawn on it behind a large glass of water. They observed how one arrow appeared to change direction once placed behind the glass of water. They had fun taking turns holding the paper behind the water and observing the light bend. Next we’ll explore how light interacts with transparent, translucent, and opaque materials.
