As we move through our math unit on multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals, we are taking time to learn how to quickly estimate answers to division problems (aka quotients). This is particularly useful when students want to check the reasonableness of their answer after dividing 2, 3, and 4 digit numbers to find exact quotients. To play the game, players use playing cards to randomly determine a 2 digit divisor and a 3 or 4 digit dividend. Then, each player finds their own estimation of the quotient. After using a calculator to calculate the exact answer to the original division problem, the player with the closest estimate gets a token. Play ends when all 10 tokens are distributed.
Students have also been working with an online platform to improve basic math fact fluency. Math fact fluency refers to how quickly and accurately a student can answer simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. Improved fluency contributes to students’ ability to solve more difficult or complex math problems more quickly and accurately.
