Visualizing Fractions

Today in math, the fifth graders reviewed fractions by playing with manipulatives!  We are starting our first unit on fractions tomorrow, so we took today to visualize breaking whole units into fractional pieces.

Students rotated between stations with different types of manipulatives.  They broke up pies, unit squares, and tape charts, and manipulated number-lines and counter-coins to represent fractions like 1/2, 3/4, 1/12, 3/12, and 2/3.  Students were asked to represent certain fractions in different ways (2/3 might also be represented by 4/6 or 6/9, e.g.).  In this way, we reviewed equivalent fractions.

Finally, students were asked to represent 1 and 2/3.  Here, we discussed mixed numbers and the various ways we can make 1 whole with fractional pieces.

Bring on the fractions~ Fifth Graders are ready!
