Can you believe it’s the last school week in November? Time is really flying! On Tuesday, we are having our 5th grade book club meting about Once Upon a Camel. Here’s what the fifth grade will be doing in the classroom this week:
Reading: Students will be beginning their novel study book groups this week! We will go over expectations for reading, writing, and talking about our novels. Ask your kids which novel they started!
Writing: Students are finishing up their wrap-up project for Fatty Legs. About mid-week, we will begin our next writing unit on expository essays. We start by learning about how expository writing is different from opinion writing, then move into prewriting strategies.
Language Study: It’s a spelling week! Assessment on Friday!
Social Studies: This week, we will wrap up our studies on pre-European contact America with a student-research driven colloquium. We will participate in a round table discussion about how Native American cultures were different and similar. We will also discuss the origins of Thanksgiving, and how Native American and European traditions continue to influence celebrations today.
Science: We will focus on graphing this week. We are going to pull numeric data from many types of sources to make and interpret different types of graphs.
Math: Today, we are reviewing the math assessment from last week. Afterwards, we will begin our new unit on dividing fractions.
