Week of 12/8 – 12/12

Looking forward to another excellent week of 5th grade!  Wednesday is a late start day – school will begin at 9:30am.  Thursday will be a buyout dress day.  On Friday, our Soaring into Sixth experiences continue with a private music performance from the Upper School All-Stars.  Here’s what we are doing in the fifth grade classroom:

Reading: Reading groups continue.  Groups will start looking at the overall trajectory of their novel’s plot by identifying the major problem that presents in their story. They will reflect on what kind of conflict started it and how the problem is building so far in the novel.

Writing: Students will select an expository essay topic to outline and draft this week.

Language Study: It’s a spelling week, with a check on Friday!

Social Studies: We are taking a grand tour of the world in 1400. We will start with Europe and learn about the influences that led Europeans to explore farther into the world in this Era of Exploration.

Science: We will use balloons to learn about lightning and lightbulbs to test conductivity!  Ask your fifth graders about our activities this week!

Math: After reviewing the math assessment on dividing fractions, we will begin our last math unit of 2025 – area of 2-dimentional shapes.  We will learn about finding the areas of triangles, quadrilaterals, and combination shapes.
