Ice and more ice!

Instead of a Snow Day we might as well call it an Ice Day! I live in Marionville so when I know there is going to be bad weather I look on our city Facebook page to see what other drivers say the road conditions are. This morning when I checked I saw a picture of our city salt truck in the ditch a street away from my house! All of that to say, I will gladly be staying safely indoors today, haha!

In honor of our ice day I thought it would be fun to search for a fun and easy activity for the kiddos to do today that had to do with ICE! I found this engaging activity online and remembered that I have done something similar with my son when he was little!

For this activity all you need is an ice tray, a few popsicle sticks, white paper, and food coloring and you have a new and exciting way to paint! As always, you could put more of an educational spin on the activity by asking your student to paint you their name or ask them to paint certain letters, numbers, or shapes!

This next activity is equally as fun and puts a difference spin on Ice Painting! In this activity students aren’t painting WITH the ice they are PAINTING the ice! For this activity you would need a shallow container to hold the ice, water color paints, paint brushes, and ice! It is great for kids to have open ended activities like this one where the fun is really in the process and not a specific goal or outcome. The end result is really cool looking as well!

This next activity also has to do with watercolor painting which I know all of my students love! All you need is a white sheet of paper, a white crayon, and watercolor paints and a paint brush. You can use the white crayon to write letters, numbers, names, shapes and then have your student uncover the secret messages you left them! If you are wanting to target certain letters or numbers that you know your student may be struggling to identify, make sure you give them encouragement and praise throughout the activity! At this age students learn best with engaging activities such as this and only working on a new concept for about 5 to 10 minutes before either taking a break or moving onto something else.

I hope you all have a cozy and safe day at home! As always, feel free to share pictures of your students with me if you decide to try any of these activites!
