Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall: A Day of Reflection!

Today in EL Blue, we dove deep into the theme of “reflection,” where the students explored the meaning of this word. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about themselves.

📓 Writing Journals: Writing the Word “Reflection”

We started the day with a morning activity in our journals. The children worked hard to write the word “reflection.” As they cut, pasted, and wrote the letters, they practiced both their fine motor skills and their handwriting. Along with the word, they included an image that reflected the concept – helping them make connections between the vocabulary and its meaning.

🪞Exploring the Science of Reflections

Next, we watched an interesting science video that explained how smooth surfaces, like mirrors, reflect light and can create a mirror image. The children were fascinated by how light can bounce off shiny surfaces, allowing us to see a reflection of ourselves. This simple yet powerful lesson introduced them to the basics of reflection and sparked their curiosity about how the world around us works.

📖 Storytime: The Reflection in Me by Marc Colagiovanni

We gathered together for a read-aloud of The Reflection in Me by Marc Colagiovanni. This heartwarming story helps children build a positive self-image and teaches them to love who they are.

✍️ Mirror Time: Drawing Our Best Self-Portraits

To put our learning into practice, we took a moment to look into the mirror and draw our best version of a self-portrait! Each child had the opportunity to stand in front of a mirror and carefully observe what they saw. They described the many things they noticed, … details like hair length, eye color, nose shape, and even their smile. It was a fun way for them to connect with the lesson, and they loved using descriptive words to talk about themselves.

As the children worked on their self-portraits, they expressed themselves through art, capturing both their physical appearance and the confidence they felt in the moment.

We explored the concept of reflection from multiple angles – through speaking, writing, science, literature, and art. These experiences help our young learners develop both cognitive and emotional skills, supporting their growth in both the classroom and beyond.

We can’t wait to see how your child continues to grow and reflect on their journey throughout the remaining few days of school!
